Power Station Monitoring

While the workers at damaged facilities have detection equipment to monitor exposure levels over time and to detect high-concentrations of radioactivity, extreme conditions dictate that additional units may be needed for increased personnel screening and replacement of contaminated or damaged units. At the same time, monitoring for explosive gases, such as hydrogen, is critical.

Surveying damaged sites and examining wider areas within the initial 30-kilometer and subsequent 90-kilometer evacuation sites also are critical activities underway in Japan. Gamma radiation monitoring is needed, in addition to neutron-ray monitoring for MOX (mixed oxide fuel) reactors and spent nuclear fuel-rod storage.

For power stations in Japan not critically damaged in the earthquake and tsunami, vigorous reviews may be underway to consider ways to improve monitoring.
