Monitoring for Worker Safety on Supply Vessels

Ships near an oil spill are not involved in oil production or remediating the oil spill itself. But, they may have to pass through the contaminated ocean zone for cargo deliveries and crew transfers/replacements. Accordingly, the ships and their onboard personnel run the risk of passing near or through areas where exposure to levels of dangerous VOCs (volatile organic compounds) is high.

Recommended RAE Systems Gas Detectors

To protect those aboard these ships, a handheld monitor such as a MultiRAE Plus or UltraRAE 3000 can be used to perform periodic checks, especially if the ship does not typically pass close to where the highest known concentrations of hazardous materials have been identified.

In addition, where benzene is expected, it can be accurately monitored and measured using an UltraRAE 3000 in compound-specific mode. Furthermore, the UltraRAE 3000 can be used to monitor airborne amounts of other VOCs such as 2-Butoxyethanol, a major component of the most widely used chemical dispersant used in oil spill remediation efforts.

For ongoing monitoring of a broad range of VOCs, AreaRAE Steel monitors can be placed strategically aboard boats of any size. Regardless of weather conditions, they can continuously monitor and even send data to a central location on the ship.
